Jessica Pegula, ahead of Elise Mertens at Roland Garros
The surprise of the day at the Philippe-Chatrier Arena was Elise Mertens (28th seed), who won after an hour and 20 minutes of play.
The athlete from Belgium won in two sets against the American Pegula with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
The difference was due to Jessica’s high number of unforced errors: 28 (Elise finished the match with 13).
In the round of 16, Mertens will play the winner of the match between Russians Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (333 WTA, 2021 finalist) and Anastasia Potapova (24th favorite).
The Roland Garros tournament takes place from May 28 to June 11, has a total prize pool of 49.6 million euros, and is the 127th tournament. Iga Sviatek and Rafael Nadal (14-time winner in Paris) became the champions of the title.
