Austria’s total population rose to more than 9 million last year, partly due to an influx of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion, DPA reports. Agerpres.

Almost 137,000 people immigrated to Austria in 2022, the Austrian Statistical Office announced on Thursday. The number of new arrivals exceeds that recorded at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015. Of them, 67,000 people came from Ukraine.

At the beginning of the year, statistics counted 9.1 million people in the Alpine country. Among them were 225,000 German citizens, who, accounting for almost 2.5% of the population, represent the largest group of foreign residents in Austria.

Without the influence of migration, the population of Austria would decrease. The number of births decreased last year by 4%, reaching less than 83 thousand. At the same time, the number of dead increased by 1.5%.
