On Wednesday night, the government put out a draft emergency order for public consultation, the latest proposal made today during talks with unions, an act that will be adopted on Thursday by the executive in an extraordinary meeting.

This is a salary increase from June 1, 2023 of 1,000 lei gross for teaching staff and 400 lei gross for non-teaching staff, with further gradual salary increases over the next three years, due to the upcoming salary law, a proposal rejected but on Wednesday evening by union leaders .

The net salary of a first-year teacher with a long-term higher education will increase by 23% from June 1

As HotNews.ro already wrote, the basic gross salary of a beginner teacher with a long-term higher education is 4,098 lei, which means a net salary of 2,424 lei.

If we apply an increase of 1,000 lei gross per month, as provided by the GEO project, we will receive a total gross salary of 5,098 lei, which would mean a net monthly salary of 2,982 lei.

This would mean that with the increase proposed by the government, a beginning teacher would receive an additional 558 net lei per month in salary, an increase of 23% compared to the current net salary.

If it is applied from June 1 for 7 months, as announced by the government, it will mean an increase in net monthly income this year by 3,906 lei.

23.4% increase in net salary for a beginning teacher with a short-term higher education

The basic gross salary of an initial short-term teacher of higher education is currently 4,007 lei, without any other increases, which would mean a net salary of 2,372 lei.

Applying an increase of 1,000 lei, the GEO project foresees that such a teacher will have a gross basic salary of 5,007 lei from June 1, which corresponds to a net salary of 2,929 lei per month.

This would mean that the net salary of such a teacher would increase by 557 lei, i.e. by 23.4% compared to the current net salary.

The budget impact of the salary increase from June 1 is more than 2.1 billion lei

The salary increase from June 1, proposed by the Government, will be carried out from the state budget through the budget of the Ministry of Education.

According to the rationale of the GEO project, the budget impact this year will be more than 2.16 billion lei.

The teachers also rejected the Government’s latest offer and are continuing their strike

Teachers are rejecting the Government’s latest offer and continuing a strike that began on May 22, union federation leaders announced after fresh discussions at Victoria Palace on Wednesday night.

We remind you that the latest proposal of the executive committee provides for a salary increase of 1,000 lei gross for teaching staff and 400 lei gross for non-teaching staff, with further gradual salary increases over the next three years, through the upcoming salary law.

The leader of FSU “Spiru Haret” Marius Nistor:

  • The proposal came to the territory and our district and city organizations of Bucharest clearly told us that it was rejected
  • At this point, I have urgently convened the Spira Hareth Federation Leadership Council to very clearly define the minimum limit we can agree on from now on
  • At the moment, the strike continues

FSLI Leader: Simion Hencescu:

  • I already had a meeting with the district administration, which rejected the offer
  • We do not agree with that three-year phase-in interval. As it was possible for doctors with one tranche, it should be possible for teachers as well
  • An increase from June 1 is one problem, a grid that takes effect from January 1 is another. People have made it clear that they want full compliance, not just 40%
  • I also do not agree with the amount of 1000 lei
  • I understand that the government will issue an order on Thursday. The members of the trade union will get acquainted with the draft order and the decision on them tomorrow. The participants have started a strike, they decide whether to end it

When will the union members make a decision?

  • The strike is currently ongoing, to be very clear
  • A decision will be made by Tuesday. Be patient, until then it’s the weekend
