Retired Russian general Andriy Kartapolov, chairman of the State Duma’s defense committee, says the drones were able to hit the capital Moscow on Tuesday because Russia is a “very big” country, Meduza reports.
“We have a very big country, and there is always a loophole where a drone can fly, bypassing areas where air defense systems are located,” he told the Russian RBC TV channel.
At the same time, he emphasized that “the military is doing everything that is required of them”, citing as an example that the drones did not hit any military and state facilities and did not cause serious damage to residential buildings.
However, he stated that it is necessary to carefully analyze what happened in order to take the necessary countermeasures.
Kartapolov also noted that drone attacks are part of Ukraine’s information warfare campaign.
“[Campania] it is designed to cause panic and provoke intense debate. The most important thing is to prevent this. This is an act of intimidation directed against the civilian population,” the Russian general said.
Ukraine denies launching drones over Moscow
Last week, after Ukraine-backed Russian guerrillas invaded the Belgorod region, Kartapolov spoke of the need for greater structural changes in the military command in Moscow to also ensure border security.
He told the RBC news channel that Russia needs a single headquarters that could coordinate and manage all military and security forces in Russia’s border regions with Ukraine.
We will remind, on Tuesday morning, several drones crashed into buildings in Moscow, there were no casualties, only minor damage was caused. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation said that Ukraine attacked the Russian capital with eight drones, all of which were shot down.
Ukraine denies direct involvement in the attack, suggesting that it was the result of the activities of Russian partisans.
“Regarding the attacks: of course, we are happy to observe and predict an increase in the number of attacks. But, of course, we have nothing to do with this,” said Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine, on the YouTube channel “Breakfast Show”.
