Poland wants to double the minimum wage in 2024 to help people cope with high inflation, Family and Social Policy Minister Marlena Malag said, as the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party prepares for parliamentary elections this year, Reuters reported.

The cost of living has risen significantly in recent months, with inflation hitting its highest level in more than a quarter of a century in February at 18.4% year-on-year. In April, inflation was 14.7%.

“Next year, the minimum wage will be more than 4,200 zlotys ($1,015),” Malag was quoted as saying by the state-run PAP news agency.

She reported that, as in 2023, next year the minimum wage will be increased in two stages – from January 1 and July 1.

In January 2023, the minimum wage was raised to 3,490 zlotys, and from July it will be increased to 3,600 zlotys. The election date has not yet been set, but is expected to be in October or November. (Source: News.ro / Photo: Dreamstime.com)
