At least 11 people have died after an avalanche hit members of a nomadic tribe as they were crossing mountainous terrain in northern Pakistan, the country’s disaster agency said on Saturday.
Thirteen other people were injured in an avalanche that hit a group of families on Friday night while they were crossing a pass at an altitude of 4,420 meters above sea level that connects the Astore district of the Gilgit-Baltistan region with the Kashmir Valley.
The bodies of the dead have been found, the agency said, adding that the injured, including a child, were taken to a local hospital, but they are in serious condition.
Severe weather conditions hampered the rescue operation and made access difficult.
In the summer, nomads move herds of goats from the plains of Punjab to the high pastures of the Kashmir Valley and then further to Gilgit-Baltistan.
“Such incidents have become more frequent in Pakistan due to the impact of climate change,” Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement.
