A police officer has been suspended from duty after using a service weapon to injure an 11-year-old boy who called for help at his home in the southern United States at the request of his mother, AFP reports.

Police officers in Indianola, Mississippi, were called around 6 a.m. last Saturday to “respond to a domestic disturbance” and one of them opened fire during the intervention, state police said in a statement to AFP on Friday.

“The juvenile resident suffered serious injuries and had to be hospitalized and an investigation is underway,” police spokesman Bailey Martin said.

Adrien Murry was hospitalized “in intensive care with a lung injury, lacerated liver and broken ribs,” but was able to return home a few days later, the family’s attorney, Carlos Moore, said on Twitter.

“No child should ever be subjected to such abuse by those sworn to protect and serve,” Moore added, calling for a “full and transparent investigation.”

The boy’s mother told CNN that she asked her son to call the police because one of his ex-partners, who was visibly “angry,” had just shown up at their home.

The officer arrived “with his weapon drawn and asked everyone to leave,” Nakala Murri added. When her son walked into the living room, “he shot him,” she continued.

Shot in the chest, Aderrien “kept saying, ‘Why did he shoot me?’ what did I do wrong?”.

According to the lawyer, the officer has been suspended, and an investigation has been launched. But the family is demanding that he be released and charged. They also demand to make public the footage taken by the policeman’s body camera.

Indianola has a population of 10,000, mostly African American. Adrien Murry and the police officer who shot him are both black.

American police officers are often accused of using excessive force. According to the Washington Post database, they have killed 407 people since the beginning of the year.
