A ban on smoking marijuana on the streets of Amsterdam’s Red Light District took effect on Thursday as part of efforts by the city’s first female mayor to clean up the area, Reuters reported.
The signs were erected in an area that crosses the canal, known for brothels, sex clubs and marijuana bars that attract millions of tourists a year but cause trouble for residents.
People who violate the ban now face a €100 fine.
The city’s mayor, Femke Halsema, has promised to improve conditions for sex workers and reduce crime and drug and alcohol abuse.
There are ongoing discussions about moving sex and drug tourism out of the city center, but residents of the areas proposed as alternatives are opposed.
People will still be allowed to smoke inside and on the patios of marijuana and hashish cafes in the district and elsewhere in the city. The Dutch authorities allow personal consumption of marijuana in small quantities.
