El 25 Mayo de este año, Argentina celebrates the 213th anniversary of the May Revolution, that fundamental day when our country began, back in 1810, to proclaim to the world its will to follow the path of sovereignty, development and international compromise as a new nation. Returning to the present, I am proud to say that the bilateral relations between Argentina and Romania can be assessed as excellent and have deepened even more in recent years, explains Carlos Maria Vallarino, Head of the Business Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Argentina in Bucharest.
Close political, commercial and cultural ties make our bilateral cooperation fruitful and fruitful. But these bilateral relations have a long history. The first official contact between Argentina and Romania took place in 1880. In 1882, the first Romanian consul was appointed in Buenos Aires, while in 1887 the first Argentine consul was appointed in Bucharest.
The excellent political cooperation between our countries was strengthened last year on April 25, when Romanian President Klaus Iohannis paid an official visit to Argentina and met with our President Alberto Fernandez. The purpose of this official visit was to identify joint projects aimed at improving political dialogue, as well as economic cooperation, scientific and technological development and agreements between the universities of our two countries.
On this occasion, President Iohannis stated Romania’s readiness to cooperate with Argentina to advance common foreign policy goals. The agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Union was also highlighted, as both countries “want to specify because they believe it is useful”, according to President Iohannis. In addition to deepening the bi-regional association with the European Union, the bilateral meetings in Argentina also discussed the need for multilateral cooperation to combat the negative consequences of the pandemic for sustainable economic growth, challenges and opportunities for cooperation in various regional formats. de cada parte, y la importanta de jointly defend el Estado de Derecho, los valores de la democracy y los derechos humanos en el orden global.
During the official consultations, President Klaus Iohannis and President Alberto Fernandez also assessed opportunities for consolidation and expansion of cooperation in areas of great importance to both countries, namely: economy, trade, energy, software, cyber security, agriculture, education, environment and promoting education on climate change, emergency response and maritime safety.
I am very proud that two bilateral cooperation agreements were signed during President Iohannis’ visit to Argentina. One in the case of emergencies between the Argentine Agency for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid “White Helmets” and the Department of Emergency Situations of the Ministry of the Interior of Romania. Another agreement concerns agricultural research and cooperation between the National Institute of Agricultural Technologies (INTA) and the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (ASAS).
But the list of high-level contacts does not end there. Next June 27, bilateral political consultations will be held in Bucharest, where the Argentine delegation headed by our Deputy Foreign Policy Minister Claudio Rosenzweig will go to Romania. Commercially, we continue to work to increase our bilateral trade (which currently stands at $240 million), and I am pleased to say that both sides have made real progress.
We recently hosted a delegation of Argentinian agricultural machinery manufacturers, where there is huge potential for strengthening ties. In a few weeks, Romanian companies of this sector will visit Expo “Agroactiva” in the province of Santa Fe, one of the main agricultural centers of Argentina.
Looking to the future, this revival of political dialogue and the intensification of contacts between our ministries and organizations, as well as the renewed interest in new business opportunities, give me hope for the long-awaited boost in bilateral relations between Argentina and Romania.
This year we celebrated our National Day together with local authorities and officials from the highest level of the Romanian government in a solemn ceremony that included a speech by the Secretary of State for Global Affairs and Diplomatic Strategy, Traian Cristea. The celebration took place in the context of a significant revival of bilateral relations, taking into account both the recent visit of the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, to the Republic of Argentina, and the political consultations that will take place in Bucharest in June. 27.
Given that I am also Encargado de Negocios ai ante la República de Moldova, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the friendship between our peoples and to mention that this year we celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations.
In conclusion, this special day also has something to do with unification, cooperation for the common good and shared values.
