University council elections: background to EKPA, elections to AUTH

It is completed today in large and symbolic FOREVER country election cycle in choice of councils based on a new system of law Kerameos (law 4957/2022). V Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) an electronic vote will be organized to nominate scientists who will fill the positions of six internal members of the Council. Yesterday in Athens University the first meeting of the already elected six internal members of the Council was held, dedicated to the process of nominating five external (persons outside the university from the field of science, economics, art, etc.) members, with whom the composition of the Council will be completed by an 11-member council, as provided by law.

15 candidates

In particular, 15 university members of the institute put forward their candidacies for the Council of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Kyriakos Anastasiadis (Professor, Faculty of Medicine), Apostolos Apostolidis (Professor, Department of Agriculture), Grigoris Zarotiadis (Professor, Department of Economic Sciences), Angeliki Ziaka (Professor, Department of Theology) , George Zografidis (Professor, Department of Philosophy), Eleftheria Tanoulis (Professor, Department of Film), Aikaterini Kitsi (Professor of English Literature), Athanasios Kougolos (Professor, Department of Civil Engineering), George Litsardakis (Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering), George Papadelis (Professor, Department of Music Studies), Lina Papadopoulou (Professor of the Faculty of Law), Panagiotis Patsalas (Professor of Physics), Panagiotis Seferlis (Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering), Efstratios Stylianidis (Professor of the Department of Spatial Planning and Development), Charalambos Feidas (Professor of the Department of Geology).

The ranking voting system (a real mystery to many) is implemented in such a way that the university’s numerous departments are not overrepresented on the Council.

After finalizing the nominations and in the context of the pre-election period, the university community tried to distinguish between 15 favorites and outsiders. According to scientists from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who they spoke to “K” yesterday, if predictions are confirmed regarding the persons most likely to fill one of the six positions, there will be a Council of internal members, divided into … three. That is, there will be three pairs of university students, each of which will seek an alliance with the other pair to elect the rector. And this is because in order to elect a rector, four of the six members of the Council must agree on the same person.

Another version of the… figures emerged among the six professors already elected to the board of the National Technical University of Athens. In doing so, it is claimed that the three elected have agreed on the identity of the rector and are looking for an “independent” to gain a majority.

The ranking voting system (a real puzzle for many: voters are allowed to rank candidates from first to sixth place. Each candidate receives only the number of votes needed to be elected based on the electoral measure, with the excess passed on to his voters’ subsequent choice, multiplied by a coefficient), serves political intentions of his leadership. Ministry of Education not to over-represent on the Council many people from university schools, and at the same time, candidates from small schools have the opportunity to become deans.

This is illustrated in his advice Aegean Universitywhere, reportedly, two university students, elected by a small number of votes, are running for rector.

In addition, the first official meeting of the six professors elected to the Council of the University of Athens took place yesterday. The subject of the meeting was the discussion of the main criteria corresponding to the profile and strategic goals of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for the selection of five external members of the Council. A total of 31 nominations were put forward, including scientists, professors from abroad, heads of Greek companies, artists, politicians and diplomats. The meeting also raised the issue of investigating whether any of the 31 formal conditions of the announcement failed.
