Intelligence agencies are struggling to recruit after the pandemic because potential spies want to work from home and prefer not to be separated from their personal cellphones, the head of Germany’s BND foreign intelligence service said on Monday, Reuters reported.

“We can’t offer certain conditions that are considered impossible in themselves,” said Bruno Kahl, who called finding enough staff and the right staff a big challenge as baby boomers retire.

“Remote work in the BND is not possible for security reasons, and the fact that you can’t take a mobile phone to work is a big concern for young job seekers,” he added.

About 6,500 people work at the BND, according to the institution’s website.
