The head of the State Duma in Moscow demanded on Sunday to ban the transit of Polish trucks through Russian territory and to reimburse Poland for financial compensation to Moscow for the “Soviet reconstruction” of the country after the Second World War, Reuters reports.
The speaker of the lower house of the Russian parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, said in a press release that Poland should be punished for “betraying the historical memory” of the liberation of the country by the Soviet Union from Nazi Germany through a series of hostile actions against Moscow. .
In comments that are sure to deepen the row with Warsaw, Volodin claimed that Poland only exists as a state “thanks to our country”, said that Warsaw should pay Russia more than $750 billion to compensate it for Soviet investments in the country after World War II .
According to him, Poland should also return the territories it received after the war.
Volodin said that the parliamentary commission will start considering the ban on the entry of Polish trucks into the territory of Russia already on Monday.
Such a measure, according to him, will cause significant financial losses and job losses to Poland.
Tense Russian-Polish relations have further deteriorated since the war in Ukraine, and Warsaw positions itself as one of Kyiv’s key allies.
Last month, Russia vowed a tough response to what Poland called an illegal takeover of its embassy school in Warsaw.
In March 2022, Poland announced that it was expelling 45 Russian diplomats suspected of working for Moscow’s special services.
