This morning, the President of Ukraine arrived in Jeddah, where the summit of Arab leaders is taking place. He is also due to attend the G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima this weekend.

So why is the Ukrainian leader flying around the world to the G7 summit?

Military analyst Sean Bell told Sky News that the G7 represents the world’s wealthiest democracies, so visiting them gives Zelensky a “unique opportunity” to negotiate with them.

“It’s worth going halfway around the world to visit,” Bell said.

The analyst also noted that Hiroshima is a “very emotional backdrop” for Zelenskyi to make his requests.

On August 6, 1945, the first nuclear bomb was dropped on the region and, according to Bell, this means that “Japan understands the horrors of war.”

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who represents Hiroshima in Japan’s lower house of parliament, said he chose the city for the summit to focus on arms control.

Russia has repeatedly stated that it is ready to use its nuclear arsenal to protect its “territorial integrity” if necessary.

Zelenskyi will attend the third and final day of the meeting on Sunday, two officials involved in the G7 organization said, declining to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic.

“Very important things will be decided there, so the presence of our president is absolutely necessary to protect our interests,” said Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the NSDC, on state television.

The Ukrainian president is expected to arrive in Japan on Saturday evening, one of the sources said. The White House declined to comment.

G7 leaders are expected to “increase pressure” on countries to change their stance on the war in Ukraine.
