
Two tragic cases that recently occurred in Piatra Neamt county brought back to the public debate the issue of giving birth in one’s own home, without specialized medical care, a practice that is currently illegal in Romania.
Statistics in Romania show that just over 1% of all births take place outside of medical facilities, and only a few hundred of them take place at the home of the pregnant woman as a result of the appropriate decision. Despite this, the last few days have shown that the risks of such an election are real. A 42-year-old pregnant woman from Pyatra-Neamts died due to complications during childbirth. The woman decided to give birth at home with the help of a woman (a nurse midwife) she met online, even though she suffered from thrombophilia and multiple sclerosis.
