
How many satisfied are we out of our lives? Very; A little; Thus; How many of us have taken the time to consider if we happy – or if that word sounds hard, if we’re good at all? And how many of us recognize this anyway? But that’s what the experts are for. In her last Household Income and Living Conditions Survey2022, h Greek Statistical Office gifts, naked, the truth about our prosperity: do we Greeks have a good time?
According to the data, 56.8% of them Greek population (16 years and older) is very satisfied with his life. However, there are quite a few 5.2% who say they are completely satisfied with their lives. On the contrary, 1.1% of the population are not satisfied at all. When it comes to financial situation, the percentages are reversed: 5.7% say they are not satisfied at all, and 1.9% are completely satisfied. Another interesting fact is that only 2.3% of the non-poor population declare that they are completely satisfied with their financial situation.
Every fourth person meets with relatives every day, and 30.2% see friends every day.
17.1% note that during the last four weeks before the survey they were happy all the time (3.5% were completely dissatisfied). 55.1% of the population said they did not feel lonely at all during the same period (1.5% felt lonely). 88.2% say they have someone they can turn to for moral, material and financial help, and 13.2% feel socially excluded/isolated. In terms of the use of their time, 33.1% of the population say they are very satisfied and 59% say they are very satisfied with their personal relationships.
But art also beautifies our lives. How much (can we) enjoy it? According to the ELSTAT survey, 20.8% went to the cinema up to three times in the last year (5.7% went to the cinema more than three times). 23.2% did not go to the cinema because they watch films on TV or online, and 12% referred to the pandemic. Accordingly, 22.7% went to the theater or to a concert up to three times (5.4% attended such performances more than three times). 31.6% didn’t attend the show because they weren’t interested, and 13.9% stayed away from indoor spaces due to the pandemic. The percentage (only 7%) of the population that engages in some activity every day (from music to needlework or writing) is low, yet 30.7% have read up to four books in the past year. However, we find time for family. One in four meets with their relatives every day, and 44% communicate with them every day. Accordingly, 30.2% see friends every day and 45.7% communicate with them every day.
77% feel healthy, 4 out of 10 are overweight
Money is not a guarantee of happiness. In our joys, we desire one thing: health. According to a survey conducted by the Hellenic Statistical Office, 77.2% of the Greek population (over the age of 16) say they are in very good or good health, 15.4% are in average health and 7.4% are in poor or very poor health. 24.9% say they have chronic health problems, a percentage that has been steadily rising since 2018 (23.4%).
One of the most common tools for diagnosing possible health problems is Body mass index (BMI). According to the survey, 42.7% of the Greek population are overweight (BMI 25-29.9) and 12.2% are obese (BMI ≥ 30). In particular, every second man (50.3%) and more than 3 out of 10 women (35.6%) are overweight. In terms of other limitations, 13.5% have difficulty with vision (78.8% over 65), 11% with difficulty with hearing (again 86.6% over 65), 15.8% with mobility difficulties (74, 4% over 65). 11.6% of the population have memory problems, of which 82.5% are over 65 years old.
In the last 12 months prior to the survey, approximately one in two (54%) of those aged 16 and over needed medical examination or treatment. Of these, 24.3% did not receive it every time they needed it. The main reason (66.8%) was that they couldn’t afford it. It is worth noting that approximately one in two needed some kind of dental examination or treatment in the past year, but 32% did not have it, mainly for financial reasons. The index is critical because, according to experts, oral hygiene reduces the risk of many diseases.
In terms of physical activity, about 3 out of 10 (28.9%) of employees are sitting at work, and 4 out of 10 (40.5%) perform hard work that requires physical effort. Approximately 1 in 10 (11.9%) do not exercise at all during a typical week. It is noted that 4 out of 10 consume fruits and vegetables daily, while 71.3% of the population did not smoke at all in the last year (24.8% smoke daily). 3.8% drink alcohol daily.
