The first set was even and Rublev, the tournament’s sixth seed, was defeated in a tiebreak after 7-5.
The Russian made a great start to the second set, which he led authoritatively and seemed to be on his way to victory.
But in the decisive set, Hanfmann managed to make a surprise and advance to the next round.
The game lasted two hours and 35 minutes.
In the quarterfinals, Yannick Hanfman will meet the winner of German Alexander Zverev (22 ATP) and Russian Daniil Medvedev (3 ATP).
