After an apology to the 4th Investigator of Thessaloniki, nine of the 10 detained for a shipment of 105 kilograms of cocaine, discovered last week by the investigation of the Thessaloniki prosecutor’s office for drugs, were sent to prison.
After a marathon process that lasted more than 15 hours and ended after midnight from Monday to Tuesday, the investigator and prosecutor decided to temporarily detain all the accused, except for one, who was released.
They were prosecuted for leading, forming and joining a criminal organization, as well as a particularly well-known case of drug trafficking by profession.
Depending on the case, the defendants (seven Greeks, three Albanians) either denied all actions or admitted their participation in human trafficking, but not in the form attributed to them.
The 68-year-old doctor, allegedly the mastermind of the scam, denied any charges, stating, according to the information, that there was no evidence in the case file that he was involved in the transport of illegal cargo. indicating that he is an “easy target” for the police due to his past involvement in cigarette and fuel smuggling cases. However, his statements were not convincing, and he was sentenced to pre-trial detention. Unlike the 68-year-old, his 38-year-old son was released.
According to ELAS, a cargo of cocaine weighing 105 kg in containers with bananas from Ecuador arrived at the port of Thessaloniki. It was then transported by truck to a warehouse in Agios Athanasios, from where it was removed from its containers. The information indicates that the cocaine was hidden on the beams of the containers and was supposed to be shipped to Greece and other European countries.
According to police estimates, the amount of net product will bring the scheme a profit of at least 2 million euros, and the economic benefit from further turnover will be between 8 and 11 million euros.
