Athens University, the first six of the council

Six internal members of his council Athens University were elected yesterday as teachers in the institution. The process of electing five external individuals known for their influence and work outside the EKPA from the six elected members of the 11-member board is now beginning. 11 will elect one of the six members of the university who were elected rector yesterday. Thus, among the six there is a ferment about the formation of alliances for the election of the rector.

In particular, 14 professors put forward their candidacies: Maria Gavuneli, Spyros Vlahopoulos (Law), Dimitris Kainurgios, Stelios Kotsios (Economics and Political Sciences), Dimitris Drosos, Achilleas Haldayakis (Philosophy), Asimina Antonaraku, Nikos Tomaidis (Positive Sciences), Gerasimos Siassos, Theodora Psaltopoulou (School of Health Sciences), Tomas Babalis (Pedagogical Sciences), Grigoris Bogdanis, Athanasia Smyrniotou (Physical Education and Sports Science) and Nikos Orfanoudakis (Rural Development, Nutrition and Sustainability).

Since each faculty can only have one member on the council, a big battle has been fought in the Faculty of Medicine, which has the most students at the university. There was a big derby between the two candidates and the professors of the school. Significantly, Mr. Siassos received 579 first votes (in the first round) and Ms. Psaltopoulou 569 first votes. Nikos Tomaidis was followed by (first 175 votes), Ah. Haldayakis (82 points), Spyros Vlahopoulos (50 points), Tomas Babalis (22 points), Dimitris Kainurgios (20 points), Grigoris Bogdanis (19 points), Maria Gavuneli (13 points), Dimitris Drosos (13 points), Stelios Kotsios (12 points), Asimina Antonaraku (11 points), Nikos Orfanudakis (1 point) and Athanasia Smirniotou (0 points). 14 whites were also found.

Elected in this order were: G. Siassos, N. Tomaidis, A.Kh. Haldayakis, D. Kainurgios, Af. Smirniot and Sp. Vlahopoulos.

However, due to the fact that only one candidate is elected from each school, in combination with ranking voting (voters can rank candidates from first to sixth. Each candidate receives only the number of votes needed to be elected based on the electoral measure, and the surplus goes to next election of his electors, multiplied by a coefficient) it is noted, firstly, that the final order of elections is not that based on first votes and, secondly, that candidates are elected with very few first votes in relation to others who are not elected.

Thus Gerasimos Siassos (658 votes), Nikos Tomaidis (298), Achilleas Chaldayakis (266), Dimitris Kainurgios (139), Athanasia Smyrniotou (49) and Spyros Vlahopoulos (81) were elected to the council in that order.

The six board members elected yesterday will select five outsiders who are well known for their work. In the third stage, the eleven-member board elects a dean from among its internal members.

Mr. Tomaidis of the School of Positive Sciences also expressed his intention to run for rector. “Being elected to the board of the ECPA is a great honor and a huge responsibility,” he told K. “EKPA is the most emblematic university institution of the country with significant social influence and strong intervention in the economic and political life of the country, and the next day, with cohesion and hard work, it should celebrate academic values, meritocracy, transparency and efficiency in management for all. For the University of all of us.” Mr. Siassos wants the same.
