Alka murder trial: ‘I took a sickle for defense’, says tenth defendant

The apology process of 12 defendants for the brutal attack by fans on a 19-year-old boy is in its final stages. Alki Campanu and his company. The 10th and 11th defendants, passengers of the third car of the convoy to the scene of the murder in Harilau, appeared before the judges of the Mixed Jury in Thessaloniki today, on the 31st day of the vaunted trial.

Both denied hitting the dead Elk, whom they claimed they didn’t see or hear, while they admitted hitting his friends – first with a sickle and second with a wooden pole. They expressed regret over their involvement in the controversial event and apologized to the families of the 19-year-old and other victims.

“I took a sickle for protection”

Describing the decision to take part in a “blind” attack on fans in the early hours of February 1, 2022, the 10th defendant, aged 22, said that he impulsively followed his co-defendant when he saw them exit Gate 4. “I heard discussions of the previous episode in Oreokastro. Not a single child meant what happened and what we are standing in front of you,” he said.

As to how the scythe was found on him, he stated that he searched the joint and found a black bag in the corner. “I thought it had iron in it, but when I took it out I realized it was a sickle. I took it unconsciously, ”he said, noting that he took this particular weapon for protection in case of a fight and so that no one would approach him. “It was my fault,” he said, referring to an incident 13 months ago in which he was attacked by a fan and suffered a serious eye injury.

“Maybe then God showed me a sign, but I didn’t understand it […] I didn’t want to do what they did to me,” he said when asked about possible personal motives after a particular attack he received. This response provoked a reaction from Alka’s relatives and friends, who intervened in the process and shouted “you did the same.”

“That’s how I hit Alka’s friend”

Regarding his involvement in the murder episode, the 22-year-old man said he did not sit for more than 30 seconds. Apologizing, he intervened while the fight was going on. “I saw a child trying to jump over the railing and then I picked up the sickle and hit him. I didn’t want to knock. It knocked me out, I broke my head because of it,” he said, adding that he was then hit by a helmet, which made him dizzy and dropped his scythe.

However, he disagreed on many points regarding the fact that he testified to the investigator about the movements of some of his co-defendants, and mainly about the 9th, and, justifying this change, said that over the past time he had put things in chronological order, insisting on the fact that what he apologized for in court was what he understood.

“I hit Alka’s friend with a stick 2-3 times”

The baton was then taken over by the 11th defendant, aged 24, who said he had a wooden stick and a helmet to protect his head. He apologized for the fight. He admitted that he intervened during the incident by hitting Alka’s best friend “2-3 times in the head with a stick”. “It was my fault. We shouldn’t have gone there that day,” he said.

When asked about Alkis, he replied that he did not see how he fell, and did not see blood. “I have never been to Alkis or seen it,” the 24-year-old apologized. When asked to describe the movements of his co-defendant, he noted that “I can only say that I don’t know what I was doing, what others were doing”, and in relation to the 12th accused, the driver of the third car, he stressed that he had not seen him anywhere.

The trial continues with a statement from the 12th and final defendant.
