Natural lighting is necessary for physical and mental health. It improves mood, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, and can regulate the body’s response to stress. According to a recent study by VELUX Romania, one of the most important skylight manufacturers selling products and solutions for smart homes, more than 70% of Romanians say that natural light in their homes significantly improves their mood.

The VELUX study, conducted at a national level on a sample of 1,000 people from an urban environment, aimed to investigate the relationship between the mental well-being of Romanians and the presence of natural lighting in homes.

Thus, for 72% of respondents, natural light has a positive effect and significantly improves mood. Women are the most responsive: 87% of them say that natural light in their homes has a significant impact on mental well-being.

What is the explanation? Natural light directly affects the circadian rhythm, the internal clock that governs our sleep-wake cycle, and helps the body produce vitamin D, which is essential for both general health and well-being and mood regulation. In addition, it can prevent a type of depression called SAD (seasonal affective disorder), which is caused by insufficient exposure to natural light and which usually occurs with the change of seasons.

Who suffers the most from the lack of natural lighting in homes

According to a study by VELUX Romania, 54% of respondents feel the effects of stress, disorientation and anxiety when they wake up in a dark room. For example, 30% of respondents said they were confused and sad when they woke up in a room with no light, 12% said they were anxious and stressed, and 12% said they were depressed and sad.

The category that suffers the most from a lack of natural light indoors is young people aged 18 to 24 – 85% of them say they feel the negative effects of a lack of natural light.

Regarding measures that can be taken to raise awareness of the effects of lack of natural light in Romanian homes, the first step would be to inform and educate the public. As a result, the majority of respondents (62%) believe that more needs to be done to educate the public about the effects of natural light on mental health.

In connection with the ergonomic principles of house design, the optimal house design should include the appropriate size and orientation of windows, including when it comes to the attic.
