A Louisiana man was arrested after he shot his 14-year-old neighbor in the head Sunday, who was playing hide-and-seek with other children outside his home, local authorities said, WAFB and People reported.

A man arrested by police said he “unknowingly” shot a girl in the back of the head after opening fire on a group of people fleeing his property.

Later, it turned out that several children, including his 14-year-old neighbor, were actually playing hide and seek near the man’s house.

The incident involving the 58-year-old man happened early in the morning when he noticed some “shadows” in front of his house, “then he went inside and got his gun,” he said in Calcasieu County, Louisiana. The sheriff’s office was notified.

The owner of the house where the children were playing told investigators that he then went outside and started shooting at people he saw running from the building.

The sheriff’s office said the girl was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Family members said she was “doing well and recovering.”

The man is expected to be released on bail while the investigation into the case continues, the police said.

This is one of several incidents in recent weeks in which innocent young people have been shot dead for absurd reasons by people in possession of firearms, the Daily Beast notes.

Last month, 16-year-old Ralph Jarl was injured after accidentally ringing the doorbell of an 84-year-old Missouri man.

Two days later, a 20-year-old woman was killed by a 65-year-old man in upstate New York after she pulled into his driveway while looking at a friend’s house. (Photo source: Dreamstime.com)
