“It’s not normal to have pain during your period, it’s important to know,” explained Dr. Gabriel Mitroy, a gynecologist who specializes in endometriosis surgery, after the HotNews team witnessed a deep pelvic endometriosis surgery. Olena, a patient, was operated on by the team free of charge MedLife Bucharest Endometriosis Center, he had previously undergone two more operations and had given up hope of ever living a normal life without pain. This time, Dr. Mitra and his team managed to completely eliminate the condition and restore the joy of life to the patient.
Ten years ago, Olena underwent two operations to remove endometrial cysts. But because not all of the endometriosis was removed, the disease progressed, prompting her to undergo another surgery after years of chronic pain.
Elena told us that severe stomach pains are a problem she has experienced for several years, but recently they have become unbearable. The pain was not only associated with the menstrual period, but also appeared during ovulation or in periods when there was no ovulation, being almost constant. These pains were so severe that during menstruation, the painkillers stopped working, and Olena lost consciousness from the pain. That was the first sign that something was wrong, followed by an unexplained shoulder pain that the doctor later identified as endometriosis.
Symptoms of endometriosis
Endometriosis is a common medical condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing chronic pain and discomfort. Regarding Elena’s case, Dr. Gabriel Mitroy explained to us that the symptoms were somewhat typical of the cases the team was used to: intense and chronic pain, transit and urination disorders, pain radiating to the pelvic member, with a greater spread to the right side.
The doctor noted that abdominal pain is the most common symptom of endometriosis and that often this chronic pain begins during puberty, with the first menstruation. Discomfort can be more pronounced during the menstrual cycle, but it can also be present outside of this period. After some time, pain occurs during sexual intercourse, which becomes chronic and constant. They intensify in certain periods of the menstrual cycle or the patient’s life and make the disease more difficult to tolerate.
Diagnosis of endometriosis
Dr. Gabriel Mitroy explained that diagnosing endometriosis can be difficult and must be done after ruling out other possible causes of menstrual pain. According to him, the history plays a decisive role in the suspicion of endometriosis. A clinical examination is very important for detecting deep endometriosis, and a pelvic ultrasound performed by a doctor familiar with the disease can give a clear picture of the extent of the disease. However, the gold standard for diagnosing endometriosis and determining the extent of the disease is MRI, which requires the expertise of an imaging physician to interpret the lesions.
Treatment of endometriosis
Currently, excisional surgery is the only effective method of treating endometriosis and consists in the resection of tumor lesions that can develop and affect organs outside the sexual sphere. Endometriosis is not cancer, but it is progressive and can be fatal if not treated properly, says Dr. Gabriel Mitroy.
Recovery after endometriosis surgery
After the third intervention, carried out with the support of MedLife and the team of Dr. Gabriel Mitroi, Olena is smiling again. The patient was discharged 3 days after the intervention, currently the incisions are invisible. “The incisions are so small that you can tell they are multiple birthmarks. Very good compared to what I had in the past, they are not even visible,” Olena told us.
“Certainly, the patient’s quality of life after surgery, as it usually happens, will improve due to resection of lesions and reduction of inflammation in the entire pelvic area,” the doctor notes.
Now, one month after the operation, the patient’s life has improved significantly. Postoperative restrictions have disappeared, there is no pain. “Life looks different after a month without pain,” Olena concluded.
