While in Bucharest on the occasion of the opening of the Suberbet Chess Classic Romania 2023 tournament, Garry Kasparov talked about the Romanian athletes who showed excellent results.
Garry Kasparov remembered Nadiya Komanechi and the Golden Generation from the 1994 WC
The multiple chess champion noted that the first memories associated with Romanian sports are Nadia Comaneca’s performances at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the national soccer team’s performance at the 1994 World Cup.
“The first memory related to sports in Romania was in 1976. I clearly remember the performance of Nadia Comaneci from that time at the Olympic Games in Montreal. And here I recall the extraordinary course of the Romanian football team from the 1994 World Cup.
Romania was unlucky then, but came close to going even higher. These are the first two bright memories that come to my mind related to Romanian sports,” said the multiple champion, reports Agerpres.
Regarding the Superbet Chess Classic Romania edition in 2023, Kasparov said that he wants it to be stronger than the previous one.
“I expect each edition of the tournament in Bucharest to be stronger than the last, and I want these players to rise to the level of organizing the competition.
It’s great that we have the best players of the Grand Chess Tour, and here in Bucharest, even Dean Liren and Jan Nepomniachy, who recently competed for the world title,” said Kasparov.
