Mykonos: Teachers are forced to leave the houses they rent

Property owners in Mykonos they evict the island’s teachers from the houses they rent, leaving the teachers at risk of leaving the island.

The municipality of Mykonos asks the parents of the island to helpso that teachers can find accommodation. Otherwise, in the last month and a half, schools will work with a deficit.

In particular, the Chairman of the Municipal Council and Chairman of the Municipal Education Committee, Mr. Giorgos Rousunelos, in a letter to the Association of Parents of General Education and Vocational Secondary Schools submitted by ¨K, says that “despite the efforts of the municipality and mine, there were no housing for teachers of our schools who take them out of their rented houses. It is necessary to find rooms from May 10 to June 30 for two female teachers and one vocational school teacher.”

In fact, Mr. Rusonelos adds that “more people can be accommodated in one room if needed,” which demonstrates the extent of the problem.

He concludes that “if rooms are not found, teachers will be forced to leave, leading to problems in the schools.”

Mr. Rousonelos, except for the last case he mentions in his document, told K that there are 11 school units in Mykonos, and teachers working in half of them face housing problems.

Apparently, his appeal to parents is not only to find housing for teachers, but also indirectly to landlords who contract teachers until the end of the school year.
