Bona Mugabe, 33, has initiated divorce proceedings from Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore, a former airline pilot, after nine years of marriage.

In court documents obtained by AFP journalists, Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore lists assets that belong solely to Boni Mugabe or jointly owned by the couple: dozens of properties, farms, luxury cars and almost a million dollars in cash.

Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore opposes the divorce but asks, if it is granted, for joint custody of the three children and part of the property acquired by the couple together.

The variety and value of the assets listed in his bid risk angering many Zimbabweans as Zimbabwe struggles with poverty, power cuts and high inflation, one of Robert Mugabe’s “legacies” to the country.

The assets include 21 farms and more than 25 properties in affluent areas of Harare, one of which is valued at $40 million, as well as a private hotel in Dubai.

Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore also lists numerous cars, including a $800,000 Rolls Royce and three Range Rovers.

Bona Mugabe also has “a significant amount of cash in foreign currency, the exact value of which will be disclosed in court” and left “760,000 notes in a bag” from the couple’s residence, according to court documents.

Robert Mugabe, who led Zimbabwe from independence from the British Empire in 1980 until 2017, was ousted in a palace coup and died in Singapore in 2019 at the age of 95.

Details of his estate released in 2019 revealed that he left ten million dollars, ten cars, a wife and two houses, but some voices estimated that the family fortune was actually much higher.
