Dimitris Kovaios will succeed Nikolaos Papaioanna, who resigned last week after presenting the New Democracy Statehood Bulletin, in which he participates, finishing in 8th place.

At today’s Senate meeting and after the vote that followed, Mr. Kovaios received 32 votes, while Vice-Chancellor for Administrative Affairs Professor Andreas Giannakoudakis received 18.

The other two Vice-Chancellors, Charalambos Feidas and Efstratios Stylianidis, could not be candidates as they are candidates for the Governing Body. Elections for internal members of the Board were announced for May 22, but due to the announcement of parliamentary elections, they were postponed to May 24. The term of office of Mr Kovaios expires at the end of August 2023.

Biography of the new rector

Dimitrios Kovaios was born in Thessaloniki and grew up in Alexandria Imathia where he completed his sixth grade in high school. He is a graduate of the School of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) (1980) and holds two PhDs, one from the AUTH School of Agriculture (1990) in Entomology and one in the Department of Pure and Applied Ecology. , University of Amsterdam (1995), in Biology.

He worked at AUTI at all levels (teacher, assistant, deputy), and since 2001 – professor. He is engaged in research in subjects related to agricultural zoology and entomology. He has been teaching for over 25 years in 4 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate courses to over 500 students each year at the AUTH Department of Agriculture. He was a visiting professor for five academic years at the Thracian University of Democritus and for one academic year at the University of Thessaly. Under his leadership, more than 100 diploma research papers, 16 master’s and 4 doctoral dissertations have been defended.

He has been involved in actions aimed at Greek society, including the creation, in collaboration with the leadership of the Rector of AUTH and the farm, of 600 gardens on the AUTH farm. Together with other Greek and Russian professors, he was primarily responsible for organizing the first historical joint Master’s program in Greece and Russia in the subject of Organic Farming, which has been running since September 2018 and with 20 students. .
