King Charles praises Germany-UK relations in Bundestag speech
King Charles met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin ahead of his speech in the lower house of Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, on Thursday.
It’s day two of a three-day state visit that marks Charles’s first visit abroad since becoming king following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September.
Charles opened his speech in German, alternating several times with English. “My wife and I are very, very pleased that my first trip abroad as king is an invitation to Germany,” he said.
“I am particularly pleased to be able to speak here today to reaffirm the commitment between our countries based on friendship.”
He praised Germany’s help to Ukraine in defending the country against Russia.
