In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mattel has released a new doll. Barbie, Ana May Wong.
Wong, who was Hollywood’s first Asian-American star, is now a toy and part of a new collection called Inspirational Women.
The doll has the same hairstyle as Wong – a bun and a low bun – a dress with an embroidered dragon, as well as red and gold accessories.
In a statement released on Barbie’s official Instagram account, toy makers Mattel said they are “proud to shed light on the life and legend of Anna May Wong.” In 2022, Wong became the first Asian American woman to have her face appear on a US currency.
“She landed her first lead role at the age of 17 and started her own production company at 19 when she became frustrated with only supporting roles,” the statement said. “Ana Mae Wong paved the way for Asian representation in Hollywood and left an indelible mark on global audiences by empowering future generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before.”

The doll is now available for purchase on the Mattel website for $35. Inside the collectible box, which includes a black and white photograph of Wong and a signed copy by her, is Barbie and a certificate of authenticity.
Other historical figures included in Inspiring Women are: Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, Susan Anthony and others.
The Wong doll came about a week after the first Down Syndrome Barbie was introduced to the company to “fight social stigma through play.”
