Mykonos: “Random Store” and EL.AS.

Leaders of EL.AS. who served on Mykonos jokingly said that “in winter, the police, Albanian workers and cats remain on the island.” What has recently become known leads to the conclusion that there are still “mice” left on Mykonos.

A deep imprint on the island from the actions of not only night gangsters and entrepreneurs, but also sworn policemen. In the middle of the week, it became clear that the internal affairs service had conducted an investigation against the warden, who was suspected of having links with contractors on the island. Some other EL.AS leaders have similar information. who either belong to the permanent forces or serve as seconded in Mykonos. It is reported that some of them maintain close ties not only with officials of the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection, thanks to whom they managed to move to the island, but also with businessmen who involved the prosecutor’s office in their illegal activities.

At the same time, obviously competent police officers sent to Mykonos in the summer of 2021 to improve policing (after information about a corrupt orgy and the activities of the so-called Greek mafia on the island) were “punished” after the end of the deployment of reciprocal transfers to the “refrigerator” of the service. On the contrary, the officers who left Mykonos, accompanied by information about their connections with the central figures of the so-called “discretionary system” (lawyers, contractors, etc.), are currently serving at the headquarters of EL.AS, along with high-ranking officers of the body.

The police and the prosecutor’s office, which undertook to investigate the beating of archaeologist Manolis Psarrou and the “Mykonos” case in general, have been evaluating information about the involvement of Albanian criminals in the last 24 hours. These are individuals who belonged to the professional milieu of Mykonos, the latter being at the center of complaints of severe beatings on and off the island.

“Punishment” of the Incorruptible

In the summer of 2021, the government decided to implement an emergency plan to improve police work in Mykonos. Previously, the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection received information about the activities on the island of sworn police officers who maintain close ties with businessmen who are members of the so-called Greek mafia. This was preceded by a series of executions of death contracts, as well as the filing of an organized crime case in the Supreme Court in the country, several of which led to the Isle of the Winds.

It was decided that the police officers who were sent to Mykonos last summer would not be allowed to serve on the island again. An officer of the Attica service, who was considered capable and honorable, was chosen as the head of the detachment. He was surrounded by police from the Attica Security Department, as well as from the Department for Combating Terrorism. The selection process was given great importance, as several of their predecessors were removed after reports of their association with local strife. The boundaries, of course, between reality and gossip are often indistinguishable. It is significant that one of them was placed in Mykonos at the initiative of a policeman who was killed in the context of the “war of the night”. The other is described by sources inside EL.AS. as the choice of a businessman who worked for the Organized Crime Unit many years ago.

While by all accounts the 2021 experiment was a success, once their deployment ended, the officers involved … were rewarded with unfavorable transfers relegated to ‘refrigerator’ service. At the same time, officers who had close personal relationships with those who took an active part in the legalization and operation of unauthorized buildings and enterprises in Mykonos are currently serving with senior officers in the headquarters of the Greek army.

The 2021 deployment of trusted and counterterrorism officers ended in their unfortunate transfer to “refrigerator” service.

Since then, until today, police officers have been transferred or seconded to Mykonos from various services and regions of the country by decision of the leadership of the Ministry of Civil Protection, while, as K recently reported, in one case an attempt was made to place them on the island, in fact in security chief, a police officer allegedly being monitored for issuing more than 200 undocumented permits to own hunting weapons.

Caretaker and hookahs

Last week, while the High Court Attorney ordered an investigation into what was happening in Mykonos, the Interior Service conducted a surprise search of the home of the chief of police, who was seconded to the island last year, and half. What was before? Local police officers (recently an officer from Thessaloniki became the head) as part of the raid detained an Albanian contractor who was performing work at an arbitrary construction site. In connection with suspicions that the workers employed at the construction site were warned about the upcoming police check and evaded detention, the internal affairs service was informed about the incident. The contractor was interrogated as a witness by the Incorruptibles, revealing his contacts with the warden. The latter was arrested, and a case was initiated against him for dereliction of duty, violation of official secrets and giving a bribe (about 30,000 euros in cash were found at his house).

While the declassification of his mobile phone was approved on Thursday morning, there is strong evidence that he was in regular phone contact with the contractor, alerting him to upcoming EL.AS inspections. so that workers who were employed in arbitrary construction were spared severance pay. Information from Mykonos, which, however, has not been confirmed by competent police sources, says that complaints were also received against him from the owners of shops on the island, on whom he allegedly pressured them to agree to supply hookahs sold by a close relative of his in the shops.

Complaints and information also exist about other police officers who are either part of the Mykonos Permanent Force or are seconded to the island. For example, one of the leaders of EL.AS., who investigated cases of robberies and thefts, allegedly brokered his colleagues to take over – for a fee, of course – the protection of luxury homes and businesses that had previously been burglarized. With regard to some other police officers who, under various pretexts, moved to Mykonos not at the beginning, but at the end of the summer season, sources on the island express suspicions of their contacts and connections with the “circle of arbitrariness”. The same sources attribute a coordinating role in these movements to specific officials of the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection.

Complaint about batsmen

New information links the case of the beating of archaeologist Manolis Psarrou (he works in the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades) with Albanian criminals operating in the construction sector of Mykonos. Their names are mentioned in a complaint filed by Mykonos realtor Florios Asimomitis, who in 2020 was the victim of a brutal beating by strangers outside his home in Mykonos. Mr. Asimomitis was attacked following his public complaints about illegal construction work being carried out on the island. “I was killed in an unprovoked manner by an unknown male criminal who, using a bat, hit me first on the head and then on various parts of the body, causing me serious head injuries,” Mr. Asimomitis said in his indictment. conclusion. In addition, in his testimony, A.T. Mykonos mentioned threats he received from strangers, as well as a date prior to his beating with a Cyclades lawyer and an Albanian contractor from Mykonos with a heavy criminal record. Of the latter, some reports say that he takes on the most “difficult” cases of erecting arbitrary structures, while rumors circulate in the alleys of the island connecting him with the disappearance in 2015 of his former partner. Today, almost three years later, the prosecutor’s office and the police received information about the involvement in the case of the beating of Manolis Psarros of some of the persons indicated by Mr. Asimomitis in his indictment. It remains to be seen whether these messages are moving in the right direction or not.
