Getting money for free is an unhealthy way to go, says Barbara Stettinger, dean of the WU Executive Academy and academic director of MBA Marketing & Sales, citing that AI will make some jobs disappear.

“I think there was a study in Austria (in the 20s and 30s) among people who didn’t have a job in a certain region. They were getting enough money to survive, so it’s not a decent living. In the 1920s or 1930s, sociologists found that people began to develop mental health problems,” she said.

Why

“Because they didn’t have a goal in life, and work is a goal. I don’t think universal income will solve the situation. So either way you should find a job that is decent enough to live well. “Getting money for free, in my opinion, is not a healthy way to go,” said Barbara Stettinger.

  • “I think there was an experiment recently in Finland where they tried it for a year for a certain population, but they stopped it. My opinion, not based on research, is that you need to be busy, get paid for it. You may be busy with work.’

Free money, short-term relief: you become dependent on the government

“Getting free money is a relief in the short term, but not in the long term. It creates a certain dependency. You become dependent on the Government. He sends you a check. If the government changes, what to do?”, the dean states.

Money, she says, is a measure of value.

“If we receive money for nothing, then we are worthless. I think it’s not healthy. It’s good when people are given a task and an idea,” he said Barbara Stettinger.

According to her, we also see those who have been unemployed for a long time: they have all kinds of problems, and they don’t want to sit at home and do nothing.

“I don’t think there are many, but there are households in Austria where no generation has worked. So your parents depended on welfare money. They don’t even get up to take their children to school. So what should we expect from these kids, from the role models they see? Most of them will end up in the same situation. I don’t think it’s a phenomenon in Austria, but that’s what happens when you get paid for doing nothing,” she said.
