Romania’s High Court of Cassation on Thursday acquitted former Secretary of State for Minorities Attila Marko, accused by DNA of abuse of office as a member of the compensation commission of the National Property Restitution Authority. . The Bucharest Court of Appeal of the first instance found Marko guilty of abuse of office and sentenced him to five years in prison with execution.

The trial, which ended Thursday, began in 2016. According to DNA’s indictment, the compensation commission, the entire amount of which ended up in the defendant’s bank, awarded businessman Horia Sim €8.7 million in compensation for a 25-hectare plot of land in the municipality of Konstanz, nationalized during the communist period, but overvalued compared to market price.

According to the indictment, the nine defendants in the case caused losses to the Romanian state of almost 7.7 million euros by providing compensation above the market value of property nationalized during the communist period. According to the judgment published on the ÎCCJ website, all defendants were acquitted of abuse of office, while Krinutsa Dumitrean, president of the National Property Restitution Authority, was acquitted of accepting bribes due to the statute of limitations. , but the confiscation of assets in the amount of 400,000 euros, decided in the first instance, remained final.

The former UDMR politician was acquitted by final verdicts in four more similar corruption cases, thus ending all legal proceedings against him.

In 2014, Attila Marko was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence for his contribution as a member of the restitution commission to the restitution of nationalized church property in Sfantu Gheorghe, the college of Miko Secuesca. After UDMR policies were indicted in other cases of restitution based on the principle of collective responsibility of the reparations commission, Attila Marko announced that he was seeking asylum in Hungary because he no longer trusted the Romanian justice system.
