
The Czech-flagged Stovhach sank in the port of Constanta on Saturday after colliding with a maneuvering convoy of barges, leaving five crew members unharmed.
The Romanian Naval Administration (ANR) said in a press release that the navigational accident occurred on Saturday morning, at 5:35 a.m., near the berth of Barje Terminal 5 of the Port of Constanta, Agerpres reports.
“A destroyer flying the flag of the Czech Republic collided with a maneuvering convoy. As a result of the impact, the Czech vessel suffered a hole on the port side. Three engines were sent to help, driving 4 evacuation pumps. Water , but, despite efforts, at 7:10 in the morning, the damaged thruster sank. 5 crew members were rescued, they are out of any danger,” the message reads.
According to the quoted source, there are no signs of pollution, but for safety reasons, an anti-pollution dike has been installed and the area will also be marked.
At the same time, a notice was issued to sailors about the danger of navigation in the area.
The Constanța Port Authority has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
