UDMR President Kelemen Hunor reiterates his position on one-round mayoral elections, stating that “it is no less democratic than two-round elections” and stating that the Union can “repeat” by supporting a vote of confidence if it proposes elections in two rounds, as was the case with Ludovic Orbán’s government.

“Before the local elections, the then government tried to return mayoral elections to two rounds. We managed to prevent this in only one way: we initiated a vote of no confidence and ousted the first government led by Prime Minister Ludovic Orbán. If necessary, we could repeat it even today. I still stand by what I said then: one-round mayoral elections are no less democratic than two-round elections,” said Kelemen Hunor on Saturday, speaking at the UDMR Congress, quoted by Agerpres.

He added that the selection in the tour has a “big advantage”.

“In single-round elections, citizens always vote for someone, not against someone, as happens in most cases in two-round elections,” Kelemen Hunor believes.
