At the end of December 1963, almost two months after the inauguration of the Center Union minority government, party leader George Papandreou dissolved Parliament and called elections.

Unwilling to rule on the basis of a vote of tolerance proposed to him by the EDA in Parliament, and not “yielding” to the desire of the palaces and the ERE to create a coalition government of two bourgeois parties – a plan that was supported, among other things, by referring to the Cyprus crisis, which manifested itself in the outbreak of intercommunal clashes 21 December, called for new elections to form a self-sustaining Center Union government.

The day after the election, February 17, 1964, the Cathimerini announced on its front page: “Union of the Center wins absolute majority.”

Indeed, the Centrist Union set an election record in Greece with 52.7% of the vote and 171 seats, winning votes from both the right and the left. EDA received 11.8% of the vote and 22 seats, while the ΕΠΕ-Προδεύτικός collaboration secured only 35.3% of the vote and 107 seats.

George Papandreou ruled until the tumultuous Julian period of 1965. The 1964 elections were to be the last before the dictatorship was established on April 21, 1967.
