Covid-19: Three experts analyze EOF report on vaccine side effects

The EOF report, which was made public two days ago and which presents the adverse effects and deaths associated with vaccine against corona virus it requires attention when “reading” and deciphering it,” infectious disease specialists Gikas Majorkinis and Dimitris Paraskevis, as well as EOF President Dimitris Philippou, tell K.

The report provides incident reports that took place in both 2022 and 2021. Reports arrive at EOF via “Yellow card (www.kitrinikarta.gr) or otherwise the central system of pharmacovigilance and the safe use of medicines and vaccines in our country.

So, according to this year’s report, there were 63 deaths associated with Covid-19 vaccines. 38 were recorded in 2021, 21 in 2022, and there is no corresponding information for four.

Out of 63 reports, two deaths were estimated to be strongly related to vaccination, one with the Pfizer vaccine and one with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Since then, 12 reports have indicated that they are unlikely to be associated with vaccination (hardly). A further 14 could not be assessed based on the available data that were submitted, while 35 reports were not completed with their assessment pending additional data requested (eg forensic results).

In addition, health authorities are tracking 1,633 reports of adverse events in 2022 related to coronavirus vaccination. Of these, 1344 cases were classified as serious and 289 as non-serious.

It is noted that in the corresponding report for 2021 there were 9,411 reports of alleged side effects of approximately 17 million vaccinations. In 2022, the number of vaccination doses was 4,547,117, with all vaccines against Covid-19.

“Side effects are not necessarily related to the vaccine.»

“What we need to emphasize is that the data from the report refers to adverse events or deaths, which are declared as such by the vaccinated citizens themselves or by the doctor or pharmacist treating them. They are not necessarily associated with the vaccine, ”he notes in a conversation with K’o Dimitris Paraskevis, Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at EKPA and Vice President of EODY.

He even stresses that the number of two deaths most directly related to the vaccine is a very small number compared to the more than 20,000,000 vaccinations that have been administered in Greece as a whole.

“In addition, the annual number of reported adverse events in our country is significantly reduced in 2022 compared to 2021. It is also important to say that EOF does not evaluate or process these reports. It releases data in a transparent context, and that’s how it should be doing it.”

When asked why there were so many more registrations in 2021 compared to next year, the answer is not only because there were many more vaccinations in the first year, but, according to Mr. Paraskevi, in the first year of coronavirus vaccinations, discussions and fears there was much more about unwanted side effects, as well as fear of vaccines.

It is noted that 1040 (out of 1633) reports of side effects in 2022 were made by non-medical professionals, either by the patient himself or by his relative or lawyer.

The number of doctors reporting that people are watching has reached 511, with 60 reports from pharmacists and 22 reports from other healthcare professionals.

60.2% of the reports were submitted by female patients. 39.9% of messages were made by people aged 30-49. Next comes the age group 50-69 years with a percentage 26.7%, while only 1 out of 10 messages concerned a person aged 18-29 years.

Finally, among the side effects of particular interest in minors and adults, myocarditis and pericarditis predominate.

“The data is very encouraging,” according to the president of EOF.

Mr. Paraskevi’s opinion is also shared Gikas Majorkinis, Professor of Hygiene and Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the EKPA, according to which the number of vaccines tested is very high, and events that would have happened anyway, such as the diagnosis of an autoimmune disease, and which coincided with vaccination, should be attributed to the vaccine (but without it).

“In any case, the number of infections is very low and certainly not more than what we have seen in other countries,” he comments and adds: “However, it is important to continue collecting data in order to export their qualitative results. in relation to real side effects, which epidemiologists carefully study over time.

He even points out that the side effects that epidemiologists have been paying attention to since the beginning of vaccinations are now largely clear. “We know that astrazeneca has significantly more side effects than other vaccines. That is why, after some time, it was decided to stop the administration of this drug to younger groups in our country – after all, there were more side effects than benefits. And since there was a vaccine with a safer profile at the same time, the second one was preferred.”

According to Mr. Majorchini, the EOF report reflected these side effects, which began to be classified by vaccine a few months after the start of vaccination.

For example, most of the reports made on the bulk of Pfizer’s vaccines relate to diseases of the nervous, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems, which has long been noted. It is emphasized that most of the reports concern the first vaccine, and not subsequent ones for the Omicron variants. General disorders, as well as disorders of the nervous system, have been registered for the Moderna vaccine, and for the Astrazenek vaccine, reports are minimal, since vaccinations with this drug in our country have sharply decreased.

Finally, EOF President, Dimitris Philipou he, in turn, informed K that there had been some abuse of the use of yellow cards in the first year. He even told us about being issued a yellow card for a serious side effect from a vaccine, without even getting vaccinated, it turns out.

He, in turn, reiterated that two deaths “highly associated” with the Covid-19 vaccine is a very small number and that the overall picture of side effects from coronavirus vaccines is very encouraging, especially for these formulations tested for the first time. massively in the world community.
