Norway on Tuesday expressed rare exasperation with neighboring Sweden for not immediately warning it of a missile that accidentally landed on its territory without causing any casualties or damage, AFP reported.

The rocket was launched on Monday from the Esrange Space Center in Kiruna, northern Sweden. It crashed on a mountain near the town of Malselv in the far north of Norway, about 10 kilometers from residential areas.

“The fall of such a missile is a very serious incident that can cause significant damage,” the Norwegian Foreign Ministry said. “When such a border violation occurs, it is imperative that those responsible immediately notify the relevant Norwegian authorities through the appropriate channels,” he added.

The rocket was supposed to be used for weightless experiments at an altitude of 250 kilometers.

“The rocket followed a slightly longer and more westerly trajectory than planned and landed after a 15-kilometer flight in Norway,” the Swedish Space Corporation said in a statement on Monday.

“Recovery work” of the spacecraft “is ongoing,” it added.

They should not start without Norway’s permission, which was not granted, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry said.

The Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority said it learned of the accident from a statement by the Swedish Space Corporation on Monday.
