US President Joe Biden is expected to announce on Tuesday that he will run for a second term, plunging into a bitter new campaign for the White House – and a potential rematch against Donald Trump – at the record age of 80. “Stay with us,” Biden told reporters at the White House on Monday, AFP reported.

The Democrat was expected to release a video message, as he did exactly four years ago when he announced his successful bid to defeat Trump in 2020.

After a series of important legislative victories and important foreign policy battles in the first two years of his mandate, Biden has no real challenger from the Democratic Party. But he is expected to be subject to constant and strict scrutiny because of his age. given that he will be 86 at the end of his second term. Although a medical examination in February found him “fit” to serve as president, many, including among his own constituents, believe he is too old.

An NBC News poll released last weekend found that 70 percent of Americans, including 51 percent of Democrats, think he should not run.

Sixty-nine percent of all respondents who said they should not run cited concerns about their age as a primary or secondary reason.

Biden likes to respond to these concerns by saying, “Follow me,” meaning voters should focus on his political victories at home and the fact that he managed to organize an unprecedented Western alliance to help Ukraine fend off a Russian invasion.

For the next year and a half, Biden will have all the benefits of a mandate supported by a unified party, while Republicans are just beginning a messy primary season.

Trump, despite becoming the first former or sitting president to be indicted — and the first to be investigated for trying to overturn Biden’s 2020 election loss — is the overwhelming Republican favorite.
