The tense situation in Sudan, where fighting between the army and paramilitary groups has been going on for more than a week, has forced most countries to evacuate their diplomatic staff. Fighting in Sudan: Western countries have evacuated their citizens and diplomatic personnel

The United States evacuated its embassy from Khartoum by helicopter, followed by France on Sunday as fighting between the army and militias wreaked havoc in Sudan for more than a week.

US President Joe Biden said on Saturday night that the US military had begun an operation to evacuate US government personnel from Khartoum, adding that Washington had temporarily suspended its embassy as fighting continued in Sudan, Reuters reported.

And Great Britain, in turn, evacuated its diplomatic staff from Sudan.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the violence that broke out on April 15 in Khartoum and the Darfur region (in the west) has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. The clashes forced thousands of people to flee and led to the mobilization of several states to evacuate their citizens.

The fighting has killed hundreds of people, mainly in the capital and western Sudan, turning the continent’s third-largest country, where about a quarter of the population already relies on food aid, into a humanitarian disaster.

International efforts for a temporary truce to allow civilians to safely arrive and visit their families during the three-day leave have so far failed. With the airport under fire and the sky uncertain, Western countries were unable to evacuate their embassy staff.

Sudan borders seven countries and lies between Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Africa’s volatile Sahel region. Military action could increase regional tensions.

The violence was fueled by disagreements over an internationally-backed plan to form a new civilian government, four years after the fall of dictator Omar al-Bashir in mass protests and two years after a coup.

Both sides accuse the other of obstructing the transition.
