Germany’s Verdi union announced a one-day strike by aviation security staff at Berlin airport on Monday over an ongoing pay dispute, prompting the airport to cancel all passenger departures for the day, Reuters reported.

The strike is due to start at 03:30 local time (01:30 GMT) on Monday and end at midnight (22:00 GMT), the union said.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has experienced some of the most devastating strikes in decades this year as unions demand higher wages to offset rising living costs, News.ro reports.

The planned action follows strikes at four other German airports – Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart – organized on Thursday and Friday, when more than 700 flights were cancelled.

“Due to a warning strike by security staff, passenger flights will not be able to depart on Monday, April 24,” Berlin Brandenburg Airport said in a statement, adding that arrivals could also be affected.

The union has been negotiating with the aviation safety association BDLS to raise wages for night shifts, weekends and holidays.
