
President Klaus Iohannis handed over on Saturday to representatives of the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago de Chile copies of documents related to Chilean refugees received in Romania after the 1973 coup d’état in Chile.
A set of archival diplomatic documents regarding the rescue of a large number of Jews by Chilean consul Samuel del Campo, who operated in Bucharest during World War II, was also handed over, Agerpres reports.
President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that Romania was the first country to offer political asylum to Chileans after the 1973 coup d’état.
“In total, more than 6,000 refugees from Chile transited through Romania, about 2,000 of them settled in our country, which became their second home. Their history represents, Mr. President, the bond of Romanian-Chilean relations,” said the head of state after meeting with the President of Chile, Gabriel Borich.
The head of the Chilean state thanked Romania for providing the documents.
“Fifty years after the coup d’état, the President of Romania generously and without asking for it, so we appreciate the initiative, donated diplomatic documents related to the humanitarian aid that was provided to more than 2,000 refugees who settled in Romania. . (…) Chile suffered a lot during that period, and we are very grateful to Romania for this gesture of donating documents,” noted Gabriel Borich.
On Saturday, Klaus Iohannis will pay an official visit to Chile, which will be the second leg of his South American tour, which he is making until April 26.
