Archbishop of Tomis IPS Theodosius responds to the attacks of Patriarchate spokesman Vasile Benescu in the debate on the celebration of Easter at the same time by the Orthodox and Catholic churches. IPS Teodosie qualifies Benescu as “a person worthy of compassion who needs prayer”: “I think it’s an accident in his life, in his mind.”

IPS Teodosie made these statements on Friday when, when asked by journalists about the attacks by the Patriarchate spokesman, he said that Bănescu “does not pray and speaks even against the church”.

  • “I don’t know what he means. He is a person worthy of compassion and in need of prayer.
  • He does not pray, so he even speaks against the church, he does not represent the church and I am sorry. At one time, he came to us very often, to symposia, and looked very familiar, he was like that in college as well.
  • I think it’s a coincidence in his life, in his mind. He has a second wife who was adamantly against religion, so what would you expect from such a family atmosphere?
  • God help him, we pray for him. There are no anomalies. Autocephalous churches set calendars, not me. I am never against the church, but I am against lies. God help!”, said IPS Teodosia, Replicaonline reports.

On Thursday, Patriarchate spokesman Vasile Benescu attacked the Archbishop of Tomis, IPS Theodosius, for the third time after he criticized a proposal to celebrate the Orthodox Easter on the same day as the Catholic one. “The most terrible twists were recorded, predictably, in the ancient city of Tomis,” Benescu said.

It will be recalled that the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Theodore Bakonsky and Professor Adrian Papagagi from UBB suggested the BOR to celebrate Easter together with Catholics and Protestants.

Archbishop of Tomis IPS Theodosius, who has positioned himself over time with several controversial statements and during the pandemic challenged the anti-Covid measures introduced by the authorities, reacted to the debate over the celebration of Easter on the same day by all of Christendom, saying that he felt sorry for Catholics who “have no Holy Light.”
