According to the sources, the French president has instructed his foreign policy adviser, Emmanuel Bonnet, to work with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, to create a framework that could be used as a basis for future talks.

France’s strategy calls for talks between Russia and Ukraine to take place this summer if all goes well, sources told Sky News on condition of anonymity.

During a recent trip to China, the French president failed to convince President Xi Jinping to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has not spoken since the war began more than a year ago.

Macron also angered his allies last year when he said they should not “humiliate” Russia.

It is unclear whether Macron will win support for his plan from Kyiv and its allies, many of whom have rejected ceasefire proposals that would have allowed Russia to keep its territories.

Many countries are also skeptical that China can act as an impartial mediator, given its “boundless friendship” with Russia. The two countries have repeatedly promised to strengthen their relations, in particular, on Monday they called for greater cooperation between their militaries.
