Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday condemned alleged espionage by the United States after the publication of Pentagon documents that signal tensions between the Mexican army and navy, AFP writes.
“You cannot engage in espionage to find out what our armed forces are doing and, on top of that, have the audacity to give information to the Washington Post,” López Obrador said during a routine press conference.
A few hours after the press conference, the President of Mexico received the Ambassador of the United States of America, Ken Salazar, who left without making any statement.
The new law, which puts the military in charge of protecting Mexico’s airspace, has led to growing tensions between the Mexican military and the Navy, according to a classified Pentagon document cited by the US newspaper.
According to a classified Pentagon document, the move could “exacerbate the existing rivalry (between the two forces) and affect their ability to conduct joint operations.”
The Pentagon information released by the Washington Post is part of classified archives posted on a Discord forum called WowMao, the name of a YouTube user known for his humorous videos.
According to the Washington Post, about 20 men and teenagers who love “firearms, military equipment and God” were present at the forum where documents were leaked, mostly about the war in Ukraine.
