Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today assured that the United States remains his country’s “best ally”, downplaying the leak of classified US documents containing information about his country.
One of the documents, leaked online, says that the leaders of the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, supported the protests against the controversial reform of the judiciary, which was promoted by the Netanyahu government.
All this is the result of a “misunderstanding,” Netanyahu said in an interview with the US television network NBC. According to him, the demonstrations “may involve the lower ranks of the Mossad,” but not his leadership, claiming that this explains the content of the document. He also insisted that the secret services were not against him, but were working with him “for the security of the country.”
Since the reform was announced in early January, tens of thousands of Israelis have been demonstrating against it every week. At the end of March, the government announced a “pause” in the process of adopting the reform, which was criticized even by US President Joe Biden. His “objections” did not harm US relations with Israel, Netanyahu stressed.
“America is indispensable to Israel and by far its best ally. Friends may sometimes disagree,” he stressed.
