Billionaire Elon Musk wants to launch an artificial intelligence startup to compete with OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with his plans, according to Reuters and news.ro.

According to the FT, the Twitter owner has formed a team of artificial intelligence researchers and engineers, and is in talks with some SpaceX and Tesla investors to invest in his new venture.

Musk has secured thousands of GPUs from Nvidia, systems that provide the computing needed for intensive tasks like AI and high-end graphics.

Shares in the chip maker, which declined to comment on the matter, rose on Friday after the news.

Musk registered a company called X.AI Corp in Nevada last month, according to a filing in that state.

The firm lists Musk as sole director and Jared Birchall, managing director of Musk’s family office, as secretary.

It was not clear whether the company is related to Musk’s AI initiatives, which the American billionaire has voiced.

Musk did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

Musk is one of the co-founders of OpenAI, which started as a non-profit organization in 2015. He stepped down from the company’s board in 2018.
