Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters
2021 Wimbledon finalist Berrettini (22 ATP) announced Thursday that he has a second-degree torn internal oblique muscle (he could miss the rest of the clay court season).
“I don’t know where to start… I finally found my level and I was getting back to where I wanted to be… it’s very difficult.
I am very sad to announce that I will not be able to play my match in Monte Carlo today. During yesterday’s game, I felt pain in my oblique muscles. During the night, the pain increased significantly. After consulting with my medical team, we decided to have an MRI this morning. I have a grade 2 internal oblique muscle tear.
I can’t thank you enough for your support. It means so much and helps me get through these hard times” – Matteo Berrettini on Instagram.
Matteo defeated Francisco Cerundolo (33 ATP) on Wednesday after an incredible match. The Argentine came back from 0-5 down in the first set to win 7-5. but the Italian finally prevailed after two more very balanced sets, 7-6(1), 6-4. The game lasted two hours and 42 minutes.
After Berrettini’s exit, Holger Ruhn advanced to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of the match between Daniil Medvedev (third seed) and Oleksandr Zverev (seed #13).
