School of Performing Arts: New University of Artists

The 24th university of the country will become School of Performing Arts (CANDIDATE). Creation and functioning of a new FOREVER planned with a horizon of 2025. Performing Arts School “Born” at a Long-Old Request art world update it art education in Greece, the announcement was prompted by artists’ recent reaction to Presidential Decree 85/2022, which updates the government’s payroll. However, the subordination of the new school to the Ministry of Education distinguishes it significantly from the existing state schools of theater, dance and music, which are subordinate to the Ministry of Culture.

In particular, according to with information from “K”conclusion of three working groups Ministry of Education and Culture which has been placed under the purview of the ministries, stipulates that the new school will be autonomous and will not be affiliated with any existing university of Attica. The same information says that on this issue there were proposals from the universities of Athens, which have a faculty of fine arts and culture, to the leadership of the Ministry of Education in order to integrate the new faculty. However, these proposals were not accepted.

Also ASPT will be a four-year course and will consist of three departments or streams: theatre, music and dance. It will be created according to the standards of the School of Fine Arts. This choice, combined with the fact that the new school will be a university, determines the entire structure of its activities, which differs from existing theater, music and dance schools.

In particular, for the teaching of theoretical courses, lecturers with the necessary condition of having a doctorate degree should be appointed. This does not mean that artists are also excluded from teaching. But their work must be of recognized value, and they must necessarily have a higher education (regardless of the subject, i.e. not necessarily theater studies) in order to know and understand the academic methodology.

ASPT teachers will join the three academic titles of the university. Initially, they will be selected by teachers from a related academic discipline at another university (most likely, teachers from the country’s theater departments), until the ASPT recruits a sufficient number of permanent teachers. The permanent faculty would then elect professors through open elections, as in universities. Administratively, a university faculty is considered autonomous if it has ten full-time professors. Rector’s Council will be elected at the faculty.

According to the conclusion of the working groups, the School of Performing Arts will be autonomous and subordinate to the Ministry of Education.

students they will be chosen by the school’s professors, as ASKT currently does. That is, with examinations in the subject of study, and not through general Greek examinations.

The school will be funded by the Ministry of Education and its programs will be evaluated and certified in accordance with the regulations of the National Higher Education Authority (ETHAAE).

Connection with dramaturgy

A special highlight is the connection of the School of Performing Arts with existing public art schools. In particular, according to with information from “K”, ASPT will be connected to the drama schools of the National Theater and the State Theater of Northern Greece, the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, the School of the National Opera and the State School of Orchestral Art (KSOT), but will not integrate them. After all, the latter was not accepted by representatives of existing schools.

Much will become clearer in the context of consultations on the plan after the presentation of the plan by the relevant ministries.
