Exactly ten years after his beloved wife Anna, Yorgos Bombolas “passed away” yesterday at the age of 94 after a short stay in an Athens hospital. Born in Piraeus, he was an entrepreneur and publisher who has associated his name with both construction and the media since 1960 and for many decades thereafter. As an ELAS rebel father, he was arrested by the Germans as a teenager for writing slogans against the Nazi occupation at the age of only 14. It was an experience that further shaped his early political consciousness, and he continued his resistance activities as a member of EPON.
After graduating with honors from Ionidio, he studied civil engineering in Metsovio and, unable to work in the state due to his convictions, turned to the private sector from the very beginning. He gradually became one of the biggest names in the construction industry along with Aktor in the 1960s (from 1999 the company merged with Hellenic Technodomiki and took the name Ellaktor) as he realized some of the most iconic public projects in Greece.

Born in Piraeus, a member of EPON and the son of an ELAS rebel, he has linked his name to both construction and the media.
Giorgos Bombolas’ “imprint” was also noted in the press with “Pegasos – Publishing”, which published the newspaper “Ethnos” since 1981, and then expanded to other publications, and also acquired part of the ownership of the Mega TV channel until 2019.
He and his wife had three children: Maria, Leonid and Fotis. Ellactor’s official statement reads, among other things: “Georgios Bobolas was a great creator and pioneer of the infrastructure sector. He opened new paths in the field of construction with breathtaking projects that improved the quality of life for Greeks and changed the road maps of our country. For more than 50 years, he has inspired people, developed the industry and created an invaluable infrastructure that modernized the country’s communications and contributed to its wider regional development.”
The funeral of Yorgos Bombolas will take place on Maundy Thursday at 13.00 at the First Cemetery of Athens.
