The Russian military said on Wednesday it had dispatched a fighter jet to intercept a German navy plane approaching its border over the Baltic Sea, AFP reported.

“On April 12, 2023, the Russian airspace control services over the Baltic Sea detected an air target approaching the Russian border,” the Ministry of Defense reported in Telegram.

A Su-27 fighter jet took off and identified the aircraft as a “German Navy P-3C Orion patrol aircraft,” the same source said.

After the arrival of the Russian plane, “the foreign military aircraft moved away from the Russian border, and the Russian fighter jet safely returned to its airfield,” the agency added.

According to him, the German plane did not cross the border.

In recent years, even before the start of the conflict in Ukraine, incidents involving Russian and NATO aircraft have become more frequent.

They often occurred over the Baltic Sea, as well as in the Black Sea and elsewhere.

In March, the Russian Air Force intercepted an American MQ-9 Reaper drone in the Black Sea, which fell into the water. The incident led to a short-term escalation of tensions between Washington and Moscow.
