On Monday evening, an 80-meter-long motorized cargo ship sailing under the Romanian flag on the Danube in Germany “went crazy” and ran aground. After he was leveled and stopped, the biggest surprise awaited the captain.

The vessel was traveling downstream from Ditfurt in the direction of Rydenburg and “attracted attention with its unusual driving style,” Hallertauer Zeitung reported.

Shortly before the village of Meihern, the captain struck the ship on the left bank. However, he managed to recover and continue his journey. Shortly after the village of Daising, the vessel again deviated from its course and collided with the right bank.

A cargo vessel sailing behind came to the aid of the stranded and pulled her back into the channel. The crew noticed that the captain of this vessel was heavily intoxicated and did not allow him to continue. He then hitched a ship without a captain and brought it to the Rydenburg lock.

There, the commander of the Romanian-flagged vessel was picked up by officers from Bailingris River Police and Kelheim Police Station.

The commander had to take a blood test, which revealed more than 2.3 ppm of alcohol. He was also ordered to post three-figure bail because of the threat to river traffic his behavior caused.

It was also suggested to him that he could continue his journey the next day if he woke up. The competent authority has not yet determined whether the coast was damaged.
